Our Seated High Priest

"And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering often times the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God." Hebrews 10:11-12 KJV

The theme of the book of Hebrews is Christ is better than the law. It reaches its climax in the first portion of Chapter 10. The writer here demonstrates how that Jesus Christ has not only fulfilled the laws of Moses, but also superseded it in His death on Calvary.

To the Hebrew mind, the focal point of Judaism was embodied in the system of the Levitical sacrifices. Christ did in one sacrifice what the millions of Levitical sacrifices could not do, take away sin. Christ fulfilled every requirement of the moral and ceremonial law.

The moral is still in force today. Christ did not put an end to the moral law. He did; however, put a death blow to the ceremonial law.

There are those today who call themselves priests. That is not a New Testament word or title for a man of God. Our text verse tells us first that the priest standeth. Of all the different furniture in the tabernacle and in the holy of holies you will not find anything to sit on. This shows us that his work was never done.

He did this daily and once a year on the Day of Atonement the high priest would enter the holy of holies and offering a sin offering for himself and the people.

Year after year the same sacrifices were offered, but could never take away sin. They were offered in faith looking forward to the coming Messiah. The high priest work was never finished.

Verse twelve starts out by saying "this man". This man is Jesus Christ our high priest. When Christ offered up himself of the cross he sat down at the right hand of God, the Father.

Christ entered not by the blood of goats and calves, but He entered in once into the holy place having obtained eternal redemption for us.

If a saint could ever be lost again Christ work was not enough and He would have to continually offer Himself for sin.

Christ as our seated high priest shows us the completeness of our redemption. I thank God that our High Priest is now our mediator between unholy fallen men and a thrice holy God. Amen.
